Germantown, Maryland. It's about 30 miles from Washington D.C. in Montgomery County. Montgomery County is the second best county to live in, in the state of Maryland, and Germantown is the 29th best place to live in Montgomery County, all according to niche.com. But what's the cost of living in Germantown?

When it comes to cost of living, one of the major factors that most people consider is real estate, so where you live. 63% of people own their home in Germantown as opposed to the 37% that rent. Median home value is in the mid-300s, so right around that $350,000 price point. The national average puts you just at around 217,000. So it is quite pricey to live here in Germantown or really anywhere in the D.C. Metro area.

When it comes to working for residents in Germantown, there are some pretty major employers in the area. Some of these employers are Walter Reed Medical Center, Data Lab USA, and Holy Cross Hospital here in Germantown. Median household income in Germantown is just below $100,000 where the national average is just around 63. Transportation in the area is huge because a lot of people commute. Whether they're going towards D.C., towards work, and any stop in between there, or if they have the opposite commute and they're headed up towards Frederick, or wherever you may be going, transportation is going to be key. To take the MARC train from Germantown down to Washington D.C. is going to cost you six bucks. Ride on bus, if you have a monthly pass is $45. If you don't have a pass and just need to ride the bus, it is a $2 fee. And this always fluctuates from place to place and time to time, but currently, gas is around $3 a gallon.

Taxes. When it comes to property taxes, Montgomery County averages being around 0.94%. So on your typical house in Germantown that's let's say $350,000, you're talking about taxes being just around $3,300 for the year. Obviously, this is average, so as all averages go, some high, some low, and so make sure that you double check with whatever neighborhood or area that you're looking in to see what the tax rates are. Grocery shopping. There are plenty of grocery stores right in Germantown, and the reason that I'm picking giant grocery stores is because there's three of them. A pound of beef will run you anywhere from $4 to about I've seen it as high as six and a half dollars for the super fancy stuff, I guess. Your typical loaf of white bread is going to run you anywhere from a $1.39 and up, a dozen eggs is going to be about $2, and a gallon of milk is going to be right around $4.
